Abstract
Introduction: Carbon monoxide is the heading came of ponccung lifaHis HI ifae United Stale. Carbon monoxide is a colories, odorless gas produced by incomplete combustion of cat boo contsming comounds. There is very housed ffithalnrion regarding the relationship betwtmi arterial, mixed venous, and bdenul jugular COHb leveb. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between the arterial, mixed venous, and internal jugular COHb level in an immature animal model of pediatrie carbon monoxide poisoning. Methods: Piglets were anesthetized with peatobarbnaL Tracheotomy, femoral arterial, pulmonary arterial and retrograde mlenuljiignlar venous procure cameten were inserted. Over six hours, pigtots received increasing conceuliatiun of carbon monoxide to achieve a level of 60% COHb. Blood samples were drawn at baseline and every tniity mmuca throughoal the study. Mixed venous and naamal jugular COHb kveb were drawn within five minatBS of the vterial sample. Blood samples were measured wsfli the RadiometarOSM 3 HeoioxigMEBr. Resafei were expressed as percent carboxyhemoglnbin. Results: There wore 250 arterial and mixed venous COHb lewis obtaated. Tbere ware 214 mtemal jugular COHb leveb obtained. Samples conpared incMed arlenalvenous,arlvial-iDlenialjugulMaDdveDou-intnialjiipihr. COHb resufa were evihisted using analysis of variance and correlation analysis. Arterial or venous samples can be used to accurately measure COHb levels.
