Abstract
Reconstruction of the larynx following vertical partial laryngectomy (hemilaryngectomy) presents three major problems: preservation of the protective function of the larynx (glottic closure), preservation of an adequate laryngeal lumen for respiration, and rehabilitation of phonation. It must be emphasized that no reconstructive procedure should be contemplated until the adequacy of the tumor removal is assured. The extirpative procedure must be compromised by the anticipated reconstruction.
