Abstract

Pulmonary Embolism (PE) is the consequence of blood clots that obstruct the blood flow in the blood vessels of the lungs. This condition occurs very frequently in the world, in-fact it is the third most common condition affecting the vasculature after heart attack and stroke. The severity of PE varies considerably, it ranges from minor symptoms requiring only at home treatment to requiring hospitalization in the critical care unit and invasive procedures. However, in the past decade we have witnessed notable advancements in novel diagnostic modalities and treatment options. This short chapter is directed to the patients and their families. The language and the medical terminology are simpler and geared toward the general public.
