Abstract

A patient with alveolar proteinosis was treated with intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) using an isotonic sodium chloride solution, heparin sodium, and acetylcysteine. Resolution was demonstrated clinically, radiologically, and by pulmonary function tests. When treatment was discontinued, the disease recurred, but responded again to IPPB used at home. IPPB is recommended for treatment of alveolar proteinosis, since it involves less cost and risk than bronchopulmonary lavage, which has been the treatment of choice.
