Abstract

Prostaglandins have, within the past several years, gained wide attention in many medical disciplines. Ophthalmic researchers have attributed many heretofore unexplained phenomena to their action. In addition, working hypotheses regarding the pathophysiology of varied eye conditions are being investigated with the concept that prostaglandins are in some way involved in these processes. It is the intent of this communication to provide a schema for the biosynthesis of prostaglandins, indicate how they are removed from the eye, and present a perspective on some of the clinical situations which might present fertile areas for future investigation.
