Abstract

In summary, recent critiques of 'medicalization' in medicine and psychiatry deserve to be taken seriously, and may be useful in pointing to needs for improvement in clinical practices and values. Nevertheless, such critiques have their own limitations, and fail to emphasize how good medicine and psychiatry can be based on scientific understanding and progressive values. A view of medicine and psychiatry that overly focuses on these fields as 'medicalizing' and inappropriate, seems as weak as a view of medicine and psychiatry that overly focuses on objectifying disorders and reductionistic interventions. Good clinical practice deserves to be underpinned by a conceptual framework that adequately synthesizes its different elements.
