Abstract
Patients with cancer are at increased risk for infections with viruses and other pathogens because of their primary disease, immunosuppressive treatment, and factors related to their immune systems as well as to the viral pathogens themselves. Herpesviruses and viruses transmitted by transplantation and transfusion are the most significant pathogens. Prophylactic modalities are available for some of these agents. However, the maintenance of Universal Precautions and other environmental interventions are still of primary importance in preventing infection.
