Abstract

During one 12 mth period when ampicillin was regularly administered to neurosurgical patients postoperatively for 10 days, the rate of wound infection was 5.1%. During a subsequent 12 mth period when lincomycin was given only preoperatively and intraoperatively, the rate of wound infection was 2.3%. The role of prophylactic antibiotics in the prevention of postoperative sepsis is discussed.
