Abstract
In this two-part lesson, problems in the postanesthetic care unit (PACU) are examined. Part 1 starts with a brief historical review that emphasizes some of the recent changes in the patient population and care required in the PACU. Local and national standards are considered and recent advances in the management of pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting are reviewed. In Part 2, other common complications are discussed in the perspective of recent large trials and evidence-based medicine.
