Abstract
Phobic disorder is a frequent comorbid condition of mental retardation which aggravates the social prognosis. We report the case of a 40 year-old panphobic woman who consulted in the sheltered workshop where she worked for several years. Her treatment highlights that: 1) a short period of in-vivo exposure during the course of her psychodynamic therapy was only possible when a positive transference had been created, and gave good therapeutic results; 2) a family consultation made parents' collaboration possible and helped to reveal catastrophic fantasies which paralysed the whole family.
