Abstract

More and more, private-practice social work practitioners are seeing patients with eating disorders and problems in weight control. This paper will focus on the nature and treatment of such patients. Because of their psychodynamic training, independent social work psychotherapists have a special advantage over other professionals who treat this problem. Not only do clinicians have training in psychodynamic areas, but also in psycho-social environmental issues. This paper will discuss what private practitioners need to know from a psychological point of view when new patients arrive.
