Abstract

Pretransfusion testing is performed to select compatible donor blood components for transfusion, thereby preventing harm to the recipient and maximizing posttransfusion RBC survival. Pretransfusion testing includes, but is not limited to, ABO and RhD typing of patient RBCs, antibody screen for unexpected (non-ABO) RBC alloantibodies, RBC alloantibody identification panel testing in patients with a positive antibody screen, blood component selection, and compatibility testing or crossmatch.
