Abstract
Research Question/Objective Improving outcomes through better local disease control is the holy grail in rectal cancer surgery. The use of sharp instead of blunt dissection to achieve total mesorectal excision (TME) has led to improved survival. 1 The role of radiotherapy combined with a standardized total mesorectal excision surgical technique for rectal cancer required further clarity. The aim of this study was to provide a 2-year follow-up regarding the combined effect of preoperative radiotherapy and total mesorectal excision in patients with resectable rectal cancer. This was defined as overall survival, local/ distant recurrence, overall recurrence, as well as morbidity and mortality.
