note = "Funding Information: Coming from a medical family background which emphasized the importance of music in life, introducing music during such times of need seemed very natural. As both of Dr. Magill's parents were medical oncologists at MSKCC, she gained vision and understanding of the impact of stress that often pervaded in this setting. Her sensitivity and clarity in communicating with health care professionals throughout the hospital was instrumental to the development of music and medicine in this arena. Through her music and ability to describe the effects and impact of music with this difficult population, doctors and nurses began to witness the meaningful, soothing, motivating, and inspiring effects of live songs, guitar, and lyrical improvisations with patients and caregivers. With the help of the Pain and Psychiatry Services, Dr Magill developed one of the first music therapy programs in cancer care, which was funded by the Hemingway Foundation. ",
