Abstract
To the Editor: The report by Lipsitz et al. (July 14 issue)* is interesting, but two points need to be clarified. Calculation of the reduction in blood pressure using the standard deviation rather than the standard error of the mean reveals the following: for the elderly populations with and without a history of syncope the mean reductions were 15±11 and 11±18 mm Hg respectively. Since 95 per cent of the population is in the range of ±2 S.D., the ranges are +7 to -37 mm Hg for the group with a history of syncope and +25 to -47 mm Hg.
