Abstract

The thyroid gland can be affected with benign and malignant diseases that will require thyroid surgery. About 150, 000 thyroidectomies are performed each year in the United States. This common procedure has low morbidity and mortality, especially when performed by intermediate- and high-volume surgeons compared with those who do less than three thyroidectomies per year. However, injuries to the esophagus or trachea during thyroidectomy can have serious consequences, including death.
