Abstract

The diagnosis of pain and other foot and ankle disorders can be facilitated by using a three-step approach during patient assessment. With perseverance and patience, the physician can diagnose all but the most uncommon foot problems. Most foot disorders can be managed successfully, either conservatively or surgically. Referral for surgery should not be considered a last resort; surgery can often alleviate problems easily, quickly, and permanently.
