Abstract
This article describes two 73-year-old white women with temporal arteritis. Both were being tapered over 3 months from 60 mg prednisone to 30 and 35 mg, respectively, when they became acutely dyspneic and weak. Pulmonary and infectious disease consultations diagnosed Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). One patient cleared of the PCP during a 3-week course of treatment; the other died within 3 weeks before the PCP course of treatment could be completed.
