Abstract

Although laboratory animal models have contributed to research on several aspects of human anxiety disorders, they have been criticized for lacking field validity. Behavioral disorders found in companion animals that present to veterinarians and applied animal behaviorists offer an alternative paradigm. This paper describes a pilot study in which companion animals presenting with symptoms of anxiety received open treatment with the serotonin reuptake blocker clomipramine. Similarities in the phenomenology and pharmacotherapeutic response of these animal anxiety symptoms and human anxiety disorders are discussed.
