Abstract

Over the past few decades, advances in the field of pharmacogenomics have made a significant impact in delineating the genetic factors that are responsible for variable drug responses. This has broadened the scope of implementing pharmacogenomic knowledge not only to clinical practices but also for drug discovery. Ayurveda has been practicing the concept of personalized medicine for more than 4000 years and it can be explored for this purpose. The insights from the science of Ayurveda may offer us new understandings of human biology and its greater potential for creating designer medicines. In this chapter, we discuss recent advances in the field in the pharmacogenomics, its potential use in clinical practice, and its translation into individualized medicine. We will further discuss how integrating evidence-based innovative initiatives such as Ayugenomics can potentially facilitate steps toward overcoming some of the challenges to achieve the ultimate goal of individualized medicine.
