Abstract

Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are a growing health concern in an aging population and are linked to worsened quality of life and morbidity. Initial management of VCF includes pain control and activity modification. For patients with symptoms refractory to conservative management, vertebral augmentation may be beneficial. Vertebral augmentation is an intervention that seeks to stabilize fractured vertebral bodies and reduce pain when conservative measures have failed or when pain from the fracture requires significant pain management and hospitalization. This intervention has been shown to provide significant pain reduction with improved functional status and decreased analgesic use while featuring a low complication rate.
