Abstract

The complexity of clinical operations in large psychiatric facilities emphasizes the need for maintaining institutional awareness of patient flow throughout the various phases of the evaluation and care process and for enhancing the integrated use of databases relevant to this process. The increasing power of computers, software and data resources are opening new avenues for the accomplishment of these tasks. The authors describe a computerized patient tracking system aimed at identifying all patients entering care at a comprehensive psychiatric facility, documenting initial evaluation encounters and clinical dispositions, monitoring patients' course through various treatment modules, and integrating pertinent databases.
