Abstract
Paring injuries include laceration to the patient and the surgeon. Provide traction from behind the blade. #11 blades are not appropriate for paring; blades with convex edges work best. Using large blades for small lesions risks patient injury. Using a blade on a blade handle affords greater leverage without compromising control. Taking excessively thick slices while paring may inadvertently lacerate a patient deeply and make smooth blade progression difficult. Pushing the blade rather than sawing decreases risk for patient laceration, as does visualizing the tip of the blade throughout the stroke of a given shave.
