title = "Parathyroid hormone-related peptide",
abstract = "Although the exact physiological role of the PTHRP has yet to be defined in any tissue, all of the findings described are compatible with predominantly local (paracrine and/or autocrine) rather than systemic actions. It is presumed that these actions are mediated by unique PTHRP receptors, although these have yet to be demonstrated. If this local regulatory hypothesis proves to be correct, it is quite possible that the only circumstances in which the PTHRP enters the systemic circulation in sufficient quantities to exert a conventional endocrine effect is in the specific pathological setting of the syndrome of humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy. In this circumstance, the PTHRP appears to be interacting (or cross-reacting) with classical PTH receptors.",
