Abstract
Six patients with papilledema in probable viral meningo encephalitis, the etiology of which was proven in 3, are presented. Four of these were obtained from a review of 100 charts of patients with probable viral disease of the brain, an incidence of 4%. The available English language literature indicates that papilledema can occur with most viral meningo encephalitides, but most often when Herpes simplex is the responsible virus. The differential diagnosis of papilledema in virus infections includes optic neuritis and retinal vein thrombosis, and the treatment of increased intracranial pressure in some viral illnesses with steroids, glycerin, urea, or mannitol is mentioned. Lumbar puncture in patients with papilledema due to virus invasion of the brain is thought to be an indicated procedure.
