Abstract
This article provides a brief review of the scientific evidence underpinning the pharmacological treatment of chronic stable coronary heart disease, of the extent to which cardiologists in the field follow European guidelines and of the degree of patients' adherence to physicians' recommendations. Finally, the article also discusses the clinical and economic implications of noncompliance with medical treatment and proposes some measures aimed at correcting these failings.
