Abstract

As the broader needs of patients with heart failure become more widely recog-nised (see Chapter 1, ‘The need for palliative care in heart failure’), so further challenges arise - how best to provide the supportive and palliative care that is so clearly needed, and what the specific role of specialist palliative care (SPC) services should be. This chapter discusses some of the barriers to SPC involvement, and offers views from the UK, Continental Europe, the USA and Australia describing the extent to which people with heart failure are able to access such care.
