Outbreak of an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome associated with opportunistic infections and Kaposi's sarcoma in male homosexuals. An epidemic with forensic implications

An acquired immunodeficiency syndrome associated with Kaposi's sarcoma and oppertunistic infections has been recognized in young male homosexuals. The syndrome is seen in actively practicing homosexuals who often have a history of sexually transmitted diseases and drug use. Repeated exposure to certain viruses with known oncogenic and immunosuppressive potential may be working against genetically predisposed individuals. The intertwining of these variables ultimately results in the clinical manifestations of the syndrome. The number of new cases and deaths are growing by the week, and an immediate end to the outbreak is not in sight. Therefore, this paper is intended to alert medical examiners to the nature and complexity of this public health problem.
