Abstract
Otitis media is one of the most common diseases seen among pediatric patients. By definition, otitis media is an infection of the middle ear, although the inflammation usually involves the contiguous mastoid and the eustachian tube. Because of the strategic location of the middle ear in proximity to the hearing mechanism, vestibular organ, facial nerve, main vessels, and brain, otitis media can lead to severe complications involving these structures. Fortunately, most cases of the disease can be treated easily and effectively with antibiotics. The challenge facing the physician is to make the proper diagnosis and to start treatment early in order to avoid serious sequelae.
