Abstract
It is premature to discuss authoritatively the subject of necessary and sufficient conditions for effective psychotherapy. The positing of universally applicable factors is the product of myopic school ism and violates the principle of tailor-making the therapy to the needs of the patient. Treatments of choice as well as generally facilitative conditions are relevant to a comprehensive, eclectic, effective and parsimonious approach to clinical problems. Carl Rogers provided a model of necessity and sufficiency contaminated by extremism. We propose a Therapist Selection Questionnaire for patients that suggests an approximation of necessity for favorable psychotherapy outcomes.
