Abstract

To the Editor: The article by Chodosh entitled “Examination of Sputum Cells” in the Current Concepts section of the April 9 issue of the Journal is a welcome review of the useful and often neglected information to be gained from examining a carefully prepared sputum specimen. However, when the objective implied in the title is broadened to include the differential diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) the situation is not quite so straightforward.
