Abstract

To the Editor: The National Institute of Arthritis, Diabetes, and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has initiated a multicenter clinical trial — the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) — to address the issue of the relation between metabolic control and chronic complications of diabetes mellitus. The study was undertaken after extensive consultation with diabetes specialists and after determination that a study of this issue is desirable, ethical, and feasible. The trial will consist of four sequential phases: planning, feasibility study, full-scale clinical trial, and data analysis/reporting.
