Abstract
One hundred and sixty years ago, the Austrian professor of mathematics Christian Doppler first described the Doppler principle for light. Applied to ultrasound this technique has been developed to an essential part of echocardiography. In contrast to two-dimensional echocardiography, Doppler signals are less affected by tissue between the region of interest and the transducer. Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and strain rate imaging (SRI) are new techniques providing velocities of normal and pathologic myocardial structures during the cardiac cycle.1
