Abstract
Recent advances in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease include a better definition of the cascade of inflammation. This understanding has led to targeted immunosuppression as well as variations of older proven agents. This chapter discusses these advances and summarizes their effect and toxicity in both Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis.
