Abstract
Three patterns of abnormally small fibers were seen in muscle biopsies from 172 patients with neurogenic disorders of muscle: large groups, small groups, and a random distribution. Large groups of abnormally small fibers were the most characteristic histologic finding in neurogenic disorders of muscle. This feature was observed more frequently in patients with a long duration of illness. Characteristic histograms were shown for each 'pattern of atrophy' and formed a broad spectrum in which some degree of overlap occurred.
