Abstract

Neuroacanthocytosis (NA) syndromes are those in which there are acanthocytes, that is, abnormally contracted red blood cells with thorny protrusions, in addition to neurological symptoms. These inherited disorders involving neurodegeneration of the basal ganglia typically present with movement disorders and psychopathology, and may be distinguished by clinical and laboratory features.
