Abstract

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare tumor in the Western world but is common in southern China, North Africa, Alaska, and Greenland. Low-differentiated or anaplastic NPCs carry Epstein-Barr virus in nearly 100% in both the high-incidence (Chinese) and low-incidence (Western) groups. Both genetic and environmental factors are strongly implicated but have not been analyzed by modern epidemiological methods.
