Abstract

There is considerable variation in analgesic response within each age group. While some of this variation may be related to differences in various characteristics of both patient and pain, the multiplicity of factors that influence the analgesic response demands that pain be managed by titration of dose and dosing frequency according to the analgesic requirements of individual patients. With respect to the initial dose administered, it had been previously suggested that age be used as the criterion for choosing the initial dose of narcotic analgesic, and the authors' data suggest that age be used as criterion for choosing the initial dosing frequency.
