Abstract

Myopathies are primary skeletal muscle disorders caused by structural and functional impairment of muscles. Myopathies are heterogeneous, mainly consisting of inflammatory myopathies, muscular dystrophies, metabolic myopathies, muscle channelopathies, and toxic myopathies. Diagnostic evaluation of myopathies should include thorough history taking, physical examination, blood tests (serum creatine kinase (CK) level, myositis antibodies, and genetic testing), electromyogram (EMG), and muscle biopsy. Treatment of myopathies is directed towards the underlying causes, symptom management, and rehabilitation.
