Abstract

Myoclonus is a movement disorder with brief involuntary movements that originate from either the central or peripheral nervous system. The clinical manifestations of myoclonus vary depending on its origin. Myoclonus has many causes including epileptic syndromes and metabolic disturbances. Diagnostic work-up for myoclonus includes surface EMG, EEG-EMG polygraph, and jerk-locked averaging of EEG. The treatment of myoclonus is dependent on its origin, underlying cause, and the side effect profile of medications.
