Abstract

To the Editor: Klein et al. reported (N Engl J Med 297:800–802, 1977) the increased incidence of positive cultures for Streptococcus bovis in patients with colonic carcinoma. They also cited case reports of the association of S. bovis endocarditis with carcinoma of the colon and with villous adenoma. Ravreby, Bottone and Keusch (N Engl J Med 289:1400–1403, 1973) reported eight cases of S. bovis endocarditis. Although the fact was not mentioned in the presentation, one of these cases was in a patient with a diagnosis of malignant melanoma metastatic to the gastrointestinal tract.
