Abstract

This paper presents a method for measuring algae cell concentrations via virtual sampling. The method is suitable for detecting the biomass of algae in the water, with the standard solution used to calibrate the virtual sample volume of an inverted microscope equipped with charge coupled device (CCD) digital camera, with the inverted microscope used to capture images of the algae solution, and with the digital image processing then used to analyze the picture and determine the concentration of algae cells. Experiments with a linear regression program applied to 6 samples diluted continuously from one algae solution show that the first-order coefficient is 1.030 and the correlation factor is 0.9992, which indicates that the virtual sample volume value is stable in algae solutions of different concentrations and the method for algae cell concentrations via virtual sampling is accurate.
