Abstract

Firing shots from a blank gun is accompanied by high noise emission. This may lead to gunshot trauma with permanent hearing impairment. Sound pressure peak levels required for assessment the noise emission of blank guns have thus far not been systematically recorded. A survey of the literature reveals a large number of studies on the acoustic measurement of gunshot noise but only of real guns. The aim of his study was to develop a measuring site for recording sound pressure peak levels as well as pressure time courses of blank gunshots. The first test results show that at close range very loud gunshot noise always leads to auditory damage. This study serves as a basis for further systematic testing.
