Abstract

Most existing mesh simplification algorithms ignore some important geometric features during the simplification process, especially in the low-level models. A novel edge collapse based mesh simplification algorithm, which utilizes the absolute curvature of the simplified vertex as one factor of the simplification error metrics is presented in this paper. Since the half-edge collapse is adopted in the proposed algorithm, the storage requirements can be efficiently reduced. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can preserve the geometric feature of the original mesh very well as well as maintaining the simplification error.
