Abstract

A yellowish green pigment was observed in the epithelium of the small intestine of fetal and newborn monkeys. These granules have previously been described as meconium corpuscles. Similar pigment was found in the lamina propria and in ileocecal nodes. The pigment was studied histochemically and by electron microscopy. It is suggested that the major component of the pigment is a tetrapyrrole derived from meconium.
