Mechanisms of electrochemical phenomena in tissue repair and growth

Abstract

A generalized discussion is given of the manner in which a living cell receives information from its electrochemical environment for such basic processes as maintenance and repair. It is shown that electrochemical stimulation can cause the same cellular changes as occur at natural trauma areas (e.g. bone fractures) and can in fact lead to artificial stimulation of tissue healing. The possible mechanism by which this occurs is discussed by considering analogies between cell's membrane and the electrode | electrolyte interface, i.e. a membrane can be the site of processes (interfacial) other than transport.
