Abstract

Atopic dermatitis, commonly referred to as eczema, is a heterogenous skin condition marked by chronic severe itchy and inflamed skin. Recent developments in the fields of genetics, microbiome research, and molecular diagnostics have elucidated complex interactions between skin, the immune system, and skin microbiome that drive eczema. In this chapter, we review current understanding of eczema mechanisms, biomarkers and discuss recent studies highlighting modern analytical and in silico modeling approaches that shed new light on therapeutic targets of active compounds present in TCM eczema formulas.
