Abstract

Dual-chamber DDD-mode pacing has become the universal cardiac pacing mode. While dual-chamber pacemakers were gaining acceptance, adaptive-rate pacing was being developed. Adaptive-rate pacemakers increase pacing rates either when atrial activity cannot be sensed or when sinus node chronotropic incompetence is present. The most commonly used sensors are piezoelectric crystals, which respond to muscle vibrations; metabolic-responsive sensors, which sense changes in minute volume; and temperature sensors, which respond to changes in central venous temperature.
