Abstract

Melanoma represents a significant and growing public health burden in the United States, with higher death numbers than all other skin cancer combined [1] (Fig. 1). It is estimated that 54,200 cases of invasive malignant melanoma and at least 20,000-40,000 cases of melanoma in situ will be diagnosed in the United States this year (Fig. 2). This chapter focuses on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of malignant melanoma, the most serious form of photodamage.
