Abstract

Flexible endoscopy of the colon is currently accepted as the "gold standard" for evaluation of the lower gastrointestinal tract. In the hands of trained operators, biopsies can be obtained, polyps can be removed, and every portion of the intestinal tract can be evaluated by direct vision. The advances in instrumentation have had an impact on the discovery and prevention of colon and rectal cancer.
